My dear friend Julie McLaughlin has shared with us her thoughts and feelings on the knitting of the Pink Scarf. Please read her inspiring words:

This project is a collaborative effort among women to foster a sense of community and to celebrate the colour PINK for Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October.

My sister Jutta is a true knitting aficionado and she generously volunteered to knit the first rows of the Pink Scarf in February 2007. A unique knitting adventure was set in motion.

From Jutta’s home in Baltimore, Maryland, the scarf went on a journey overseas to my sister Isolde in Bad Soden, Germany. With much enthusiasm, Isolde added another section to the scarf and then shipped it to Canada. The Pink Scarf arrived in Toronto in mid March and will continue to travel through the hands of many knitters.

The overall length of the finished piece will depend on the number of participants and how many rows each person will be able to knit. Some may get carried away into a mad knitting frenzy and who knows, the scarf may turn out to be longer than Canada’s National Debt.

Since pink is the colour used worldwide in support of Breast Cancer Awareness, we will be knitting in pink only. Each woman will be encouraged to add a different type of pink yarn and also vary the knitting patterns – creative approaches are welcome!

The Pink Scarf went on display at the CHEST OF HOPE exhibition at the Gladstone Hotel in Toronto, October 22-26, 2007 and visitors were encouraged to knit while sitting in a comfortable Rocking Chair with pink cushions.

The journey of the Pink Scarf continues as it will once again travel through many caring hands. To become part of the sisterhood of knitters, please contact Christa Gampp: chestofhope@rogers.com.
